The Communications Workers of America-Canada Local 30248 was first chartered in 1902 and is one of the longest serving Unions in Ontario. Also known as "The Peterborough Typographical Union" the Union was formed to represent composing room workers at the Peterborough Examiner. The local now represents workers at daily newspapers throughout central Ontario and has two bargaining units of Child and Youth Workers and Social Workers at a Children's Mental Health centre in Oshawa and Whitby. Affiliated with CWA-Canada and the Communications Workers of America (CWA), Local 30248 is part of one of the largest Unions in North America representing over 600,000 workers in public and private sector employment.
CWA members are employed in public service, health care, higher education, telecommunications, printing and news media, law enforcement and other fields. CWA holds over 1,000 collective bargaining agreements spelling out wages, benefits and working conditions for its members.
Elections for a new Local Executive will take place in November. Please see Union bulletin boards at your workplace for details on what you need to do if you wish to nominate someone for a position on the Executive.
